Beginner Basics

This page is targeted towards assisting the beginning scrapper...tips and ideas accumulated from my year of scrapping are offered here. Please feel free to suggest any new tips to add!

Essential Scrapping Supplies:
*archival quality album
*acid-free, lignin-free paper (cardstock)
*photo safe adhesive
*pen/marker, photosafe
*paper cutter
*basic scissors (Fiskars/Creative Memories)
*corner rounder
*page protectors (unless album provides these)

Additional Supplies As Needed:

*decorative scissors
*templates
*craft punches
*additional pens for borders, journaling
*oval and circle cutters
*patterned paper (acid-free, lignin-free)
*stamps
*chalks
*vellum paper
*idea books
*scrapbooking magazines

For Initial Layout:

*choose initial album size (usually 8x10 or 12x12).
*get double prints or use a Picture Maker for copies.
*choose 4-6 recent photos of event or theme.
*select focal picture for each page.
*highlight focal point with shape, size, placement or color choices.
*crop photos to desired shape, using scissors, paper trimmer or corner rounder. crop cautiously in the beginning, as often novice scrappers crop too much out of the picture.
*arrange photos on the page, keeping the layout of the opposite page as well. new scrappers often do a 2 page layout in the beginning.
*crop with a friend or at a workshop, if possible.
*begin with simple layouts and simple embellishments-less is more!
*journal in your own handwriting at least part of the time.
*begin with the most basic supplies and purchase additional items only as you need them.
*avoid fingerprints on photos due to buildup of oil residue on hands.
*use soft flannel cloth to wipe fingerprints off photos.
*learn what the different scrapbooking terms mean, as there is not one uniform standard that defines archival supplies.
*a glossary of scrapbooking terms can be accessed on the favorite links page.
